Here is a description of each Amazon type shown on our World of Amazon Parrots page. All our participants are beautiful birds. As each photo is different - with lighting, cropping and the bird's pose, our intention here (besides Zachary, for his own website purpose) is to use one picture of each type that best illustrates the specific type's color of feathers, eyes, feet and beak.

DOUBLE YELLOW HEAD AMAZON (Amazona Ochrocephala Oratix)
Range: Mexico
Size: One of the larger Amazons. Total length 15 inches (39 cm). Average weight: 445-650 gms.
Appearance: Yellow at the front, crown and nape of the neck down to the throat area. The yellow is carried through to the foreneck on many subspecies. Back is dark green, breast and vent area is lighter green. Bend of wing is red, fading to yellow. Underside of tail is heavily marked with red and some blue, beak is horn colored, iris is light orange, and feet are lighter colored than most yellow headed Amazons.

BLUE FRONTED AMAZON (Amazona Aestiva)
Range: Northeastern Brazil to Paraguay & the northern parts of Argentina.
Size: Total length 14 inches (35 cm). Average weight: 275-500 gms.
Appearance: Forehead is bright blue, also some on crown & eye region. In some birds the front, throat and breastfront have hints of yellow and blue. Bend of the wings are red with some yellow, tail feathers are red at the base, beak is black, feet are blueish gray; iris is red to orange.

RED LORED AMAZON (Amazona Autumnalis)
Range: East coast of Mexico to the peninsula of Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.
Size: Total length 13 1/2 inches (34 cm). Average weight: 350-400 gms.
Appearance: Forehead and lores are scarlet red, crown and nape are bluish purple, cheeks are yellow, lower nape & back are dark green, bend of wing is red, beak is dark horn & black colored, feet are gray, iris is gold brown to dark brown.

YELLOW NAPED AMAZON (Amazona Ochrocephala Auropalliata)
Range: Central America, from southwestern Mexico in the north to Costa Rica in the south.
Size: One of the larger Amazons. Total length 15 inches (39 cm). Average weight: 450-650 gms.
Appearance: Forehead and crown is a distinct dark green. A yellow band which varies from bird to bird is seen on the nape of the neck. Wings are green at the bend with NO red or yellow, thighs are light green, beak is dark gray to black, iris is orange.

YELLOW FRONTED AMAZON (Amazona Ochrocephala)
Range: South America from the Guyanas and Venezuela in the east to the Colombian Andes in the west; & the island of Trinidad.
Size: Total length 13 1/2 inches (35 cm). Average weight: 350-450 gms.
Appearance: Frontal area is yellow, with an extremely narrow green band on the frontal edge of the forehead. Crown, nape and feathers are dark green, bend of wing is red, and red at the base of the tail. Beak is dark gray, feet are gray, and iris is orange.

PANAMA OR YELLOW CROWNED AMAZON (Amazona Ochrocephala Panamensis)
Range: Western Panama and the tropical lowlands in the northern Colombia
Size: Total length 13 inches (33 cm). Average weight: 300-450 gms.
Appearance: Bright yellow on the frontal areas, crown and lores. The yellow extends from the cere onto the crown, beak is horn colored with a darker point on the upper mandible, feet are flesh colored, iris is orange.

MEXICAN RED HEAD AMAZON, or GREEN CHEEKED AMAZON (Amazona Viridigenalis)
Range: Northeastern Mexico exclusively.
Size: Total length 13 inches (33 cm). Average weight: 275-350 gms.
Appearance: Forehead and crown red, blue band from the base of the eyes to nape of neck, primary coverts are green, primaries are blue & green at base. There is red at the base of the 1st 5 secondaries. Beak is yellowish/horn colored, legs are gray, iris is yellow.

LILAC CROWNED, or FINSCH'S AMAZON (Amazona Finschi)
Range: Western Mexico.
Size: Total length 13 inches (33 cm). Average weight: 300-400 gms.
Appearance: Dark reddish maroon front and lores. Crown, feathers of neck and down the lateral edges of nape are lilac in color. The actual green feathers of the nape are edged in lilac also; half moon around cheek is bluish white, beak is horn colored, feet are gray, iris is orange.

ORANGE WINGED AMAZON (Amazona Amazonica)
Range: All of northern South America with the exception of the Andes areas in the west & the coastal districts of eastern Brazil. Also in parts of Bolivia and the nothern tip of Paraguay.
Size: 13 inches (33 cm). Average weight: 350-450 gms.
Appearance: Front and lores are irregularly blue-yellow, with blue extending above the eye. Crown is yellow, wing feathers are orange, black, blue and green; cheeks are yellow, underside of tail is marked with some orange feathers, beak is horn colored but dark at the tip, feet are gray, and iris is yellow-orange.

MEALY AMAZON (Amazona Farinosa)
Range: From Mexico in the north to the southern Atlantic coast of Brazil in the south; & in the northwestern part of South America.
Size: The largest Amazon type. Total length 16 inches (41 cm). Average weight: 550-700 gms.
Appearance: Feathers of the front are green edged in black, some feathers on the crown are yellow, bend of wing is red, primary feathers of wings are black w/blue & green. Tail is dark green with yellow tips, unfeathered eye ring is white, beak is dark horn color with a yellow area at the base of the upper mandible; feet are gray, and iris is red brown.

HISPANIOLAN AMAZON or SANTO DOMINGO AMAZON (Amazona Ventralis)
Range: Dominican Republic.
Size: Total length 11 inches (28 cm). Average weight: 200-350 gms.
Appearance: Front is generally white & some have few yellow feathers at base of bill & under mandible of chin. There is a distinct white eye ring encircling a black eye. Each ear covert has distinct black feathers that make up a circular appearance of black at each ear. Feathers of crown, nape & back are bright green edged in black; breast feathers lighter green, becoming red, yellow and green towards the rear. Lower abdomen is rich red maroon.Wing primaries are dark blue on fore side and black on the other. Each tail feather is quartered in 4 colors - yellow, sky blue, red & light green; beak is flashy horn colored with a light cere.

WHITE FRONTED AMAZON or SPECTACLED AMAZON (Amazona Albifrons)
Range: From the west coast of Mexico across Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua to Costa Rica.
Size: The smallest Amazon type - Total length 10 inches (26 cm). Average weight: 200-250 gms.
Appearance: The front and forecrown are white, the crown is blue, the lores and eye areas are bright red. The alula (edge) of the wing is red in males, this red is absent in females - Thus this is the only Amazon species that is dimorphic. Primary coverts are red, while primary & secondary feathers of the wings are green and blue. There is red at the base of the tail. Beak is yellow fading to horn colored at the tip. Eye rings are gray-white, legs bright gray, & iris yellowish.
