Parrots need natural sunlight for optimum health and wellness. Daily sunlight is just as important to a parrot as good food and exercise. As pets in a household environment, parrots are less able to get enough sunshine outdoors. Parrots should get at least 3 hours of sunlight (with a shaded area to cool off) everyday. In places with a sunny & warm climate, you can build or buy an outdoor cage and let your bird spend a a few hours a day in there. Remember to secure the cage very well so that wild birds, predators and thieves cannot get to your parrot. Securing will include double-wiring, locks and making sure that it's a large sturdy cage that cannot be carried away. The cage should be located in an area of your property that is gated and away from onlookers and strangers.

Here is an example of Zachary's outdoor cage. You can read about the details of the cage in the " A Parrot's Living Quarters" Page.

Our other two birds - a senegal parrot and lovebird, share an outdoor cage for a few hours of sunlight a day.

This is Zachary's outdoor playgym, where he enjoys hanging out while we are closeby. Use different size perches, ropes and toys to keep them busy and physically challenged. Also make sure your bird has a shaded area from the sun.

Another option for sunlight is to purchase a full spectrum lamp:

The one that Zachary uses is an OTT-Lite Floor model. These natural light supplements replicate the natural light environment which will work for those who can't have an outdoor setup, during cool & rainy days; and for the days you just want to keep your parrot indoors.
